How to Help Others Encounter Jesus as a Christian Yoga Teacher
Can you help others encounter Jesus as a Christian yoga teacher? The answer may surprise you.
In a world that feels increasingly fast, fragmented, and noisy, many people are quietly longing for stillness, connection, and meaning. As a Christian yoga teacher, you have a unique opportunity to create space for others to slow down, listen, and encounter the presence of God through Jesus in a deeply personal way.
In this blog, we’ll explore the question of whether Christians should practice and teach yoga, how to become a Christian yoga teacher, and how this practice can be used as a powerful tool for ministry.
Should Christians Become Yoga Teachers?
Should Christians practice yoga, let alone teach it? This is a question many Christians wrestle with, and it often comes with strong opinions on both sides. When it comes to yoga for Christians, the questions we must ask are: Is it permissible? And is it beneficial?
For some, these questions remain theoretical. For others, they become deeply personal.
In my own experience, the answer has been yes to both. From my perspective, when practiced with discernment and centered on Christ, yoga can be understood primarily as a spiritual discipline—like fasting or embodied prayer—rather than a religious allegiance or spiritual replacement. For this reason, I believe it is permissible for Christians.
Yoga has been a powerful tool that has helped me come home to my body, a place many of us have learned to ignore or disconnect from.
As Christians, we hold an incarnate theology, one that affirms that God meets us not apart from our bodies, but within them. Because of this, practices like yoga help me live a more embodied faith, grounding my spirituality in a lived, physical awareness rather than abstraction.
Through the practice, I have cultivated a rhythm of inner listening that has helped me become more aware of God’s presence. In the quiet, I have learned to recognize the “still small voice” of God more clearly.
Does Christ-Centered Yoga Glorify God?
At the heart of the conversation around Christians practicing yoga is a deeper question: Can yoga be practiced in a way that glorifies God? The Westminster Confession reminds us that our chief end is to glorify God and enjoy Him forever.
In my experience, Christ-centered yoga has helped me enjoy God through the gift of His Creation, and in that enjoyment, God is glorified. As I become more aware of the sacred architecture of my body, the gift of my breath, and my life in the Holy Spirit, I find myself responding with gratitude, attention, and reverence.
Rather than pulling me away from my faith, yoga has formed me into a more embodied and attentive follower of Jesus, one who honors God not only with my thoughts, but with my whole being.
Through the practice of yoga, I’ve become more awake to the thousand generosities of God. Becoming a yoga teacher is an opportunity to share those same gifts—peace, presence, and awareness of God—with others.
The Joy of Teaching Christ-Centered Yoga
As a Christian yoga teacher, you are more than an instructor. You create space for people to pause and meet Jesus personally. Teaching from a Christ-centered perspective allows you to point others to Jesus, helping them experience His presence not just in their minds, but in their whole being.
In short, Christians can not only practice yoga faithfully, but they can answer a calling to teach it as a form of ministry, sharing God’s presence through an embodied practice.
How to Become a Christian Yoga Teacher
If you are considering becoming a Christian yoga teacher, the next step is finding a yoga teacher training. This path is about more than just certification; it’s a calling into deeper practice and leadership.
As a Christian yoga teacher, you are stepping into a way of guiding others toward a deeper awareness of God. With so many programs available, it is important to find one that aligns with your values, goals, and season of life.
What to look for in a training:
Not all trainings are the same, especially when it comes to integrating faith. As you explore your options, here are a few key things to consider:
- Worldview and integration of faith: Does the program honor and incorporate your Christian beliefs?
- Depth of teaching: Does it cover anatomy, sequencing, philosophy, teaching skills, ethical and pastoral awareness in a meaningful way?
- Spiritual formation: Does it support your relationship with God, not just your teaching skills?
- Community and mentorship: Will you be supported during and after the training?
- Format and flexibility: Does it fit your lifestyle and availability?
How to discern the Right Program:
-
- Pray for guidance. Invite the Holy Spirit into the process. This is more than a career move. It is a step of obedience and spiritual growth.
- Ask questions. Do not be afraid to dig deep. Inquire about the program’s theological foundations, its approach to yoga philosophy, and how Scripture is integrated throughout the training.
- Observe leadership. Look at the leader’s life and fruit, their teaching, and how they live out their faith. Notice how long their teaching team has stayed and how well people get along. Frequent turnover or tension can be a warning sign.
- Talk to past graduates. Their experiences can offer honest insight into the program’s strengths, challenges, leadership style, and community.
- Schedule a discovery call. Connecting with program leaders can help you discern the heart behind the training and whether it is a good fit for your season and calling.
Teaching Christian Yoga Classes
Teaching “Christian yoga” classes is essentially teaching yoga from a Christian perspective, guiding people to encounter Jesus through movement, breath, and stillness.
Yoga itself is a universal practice, embraced by people from many faith traditions, Hindu, Buddhist, or otherwise, without labeling the practice by religion. In the same way, Christian yoga teachers guide classes through a Christian worldview, honoring the body, mind, and the Holy Spirit within us.
It’s important to note that not all Christian yoga teachers lead explicitly Christ-centered classes. Some teach in traditional studios, serving as ambassadors for Jesus by bringing His presence and perspective into those spaces. Others intentionally weave Scripture, prayer, worship, and movement into the practice.
Neither approach is right or wrong; it often depends on your calling and context. If you feel led to teach Christ-centered classes, you have the opportunity to create a space where people can encounter God not just intellectually, but with their whole being.
Using Christ-Centered Yoga as a Ministry Tool
We are living in a time where anxiety is high, attention is scattered, and many people feel disconnected from themselves, others, and God.
Yoga offers something deeply needed: the practice of getting still.
Through intentional movement, breath, and awareness, people learn to become grounded in the present moment physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. This posture of presence creates space to hear from God, rest in Him, and reconnect with Truth.
As a ministry tool, Christ-centered yoga can:
- Help people slow down and become aware of God’s presence
- Create a safe space for healing and restoration
- Invite a deeper, embodied experience of faith
- Support believers in living with greater peace, clarity, and alignment
In this way, yoga becomes more than a practice. It becomes a pathway for transformation.
