What’s the Difference Between 300-Hour and 200-Hour Yoga Teacher Training?

As we prepare to launch our newest program in Christ-centered yoga training this August, I’ve had the joy of connecting with many prospective students through discovery calls. One of the most common questions I hear is: What’s the difference between a 200-hour yoga teacher training and a 300-hour YTT?

In this blog, we’ll explore where these titles come from, what those numbers actually mean, and how each training path can support your unique calling as a Christ-centered yoga teacher.

The Role of Yoga Alliance in 200- and 300-Hour Teacher Trainings

To begin, it helps to understand that these designations come from Yoga Alliance, the leading organization that sets standards for yoga teacher training programs. While not required to teach yoga, Yoga Alliance certification is recognized globally and helps ensure a level of consistency and professionalism in training.

There are differing opinions both within the Christian community and the broader yoga world about the value and role of Yoga Alliance. However, in my view as a Christian yoga teacher and leader of a Christ-centered YTT program, part of our calling is to be well-equipped to represent Christ in the wider yoga space.

I am passionate about moving beyond the Christian yoga bubble to engage meaningfully with the broader yoga community, speaking intelligently about its practices and philosophies while staying deeply rooted in my faith as a follower of Christ.

Our YTT program is registered through Yoga Alliance—the leading non-profit organization providing globally-recognized credentials. It stands as the marker of high-quality, safe, accessible, and equitable yoga teaching and unifies members around a shared Ethical Commitment. Upon graduation, you will be eligible to register as an RYT-200 with Yoga Alliance.

Get Started With the 200-Hour Yoga Teacher Training

If you’re new to teaching yoga or have felt a nudge from the Holy Spirit to explore embodiment and movement as ministry, the 200-hour yoga teacher training is your starting point

A 200-hour yoga teacher training is the foundational certification recognized by Yoga Alliance. You can think of it as your “bachelor’s” degree in teaching yoga. This level of certification will equip you with the skills to begin teaching safely and confidently, covering core topics like anatomy, philosophy, sequencing, and teaching methodology.

In a Yoga Alliance-accredited 200 YTT, you will learn:

  • Foundations of yoga philosophy and history
  • Anatomy and safe movement principles
  • Asana, alignment, and sequencing skills
  • Introduction to breathwork (pranayama) and meditation
  • Teaching practice and professional ethics

Become a Christian Yoga Instructor

Our Christ-centered 200-hour yoga teacher training is a deep, immersive journey into what it means to be a Spirit-led teacher of yoga and an embodied follower of Christ.

Designed to shape both your soul and your teaching, our training provides a comprehensive foundation integrating the physical, emotional, and philosophical components of yoga with the study of both biblical and yogic texts.

During our training, you’ll explore creative spiritual practices such as embodied worship, meditation, and contemplative prayer, while receiving Christ-centered teaching on yogic philosophy through the lens of Scripture.

Together, we will experience yoga as a Christian spiritual practice that draws us closer to Jesus and learn how to hold sacred space. You’ll also become part of a global community of believers seeking to love God with heart, soul, mind, and strength and to lead others in doing the same.

Through rich Biblical study, Spirit-led movement, and rhythms of prayer, this training nourishes both your teaching and your walk with Christ.

Whether your desire is to teach in your church, lead classes in your community, or simply deepen your walk with God, this program is a beautiful invitation to embody your faith on the mat.

Going Deeper: The 300-Hour Yoga Teacher Training

Already certified to teach yoga and longing to go deeper? The 300-hour yoga teacher training is an advanced program meant for those who’ve already completed a 200-hour training.

The 300-hour yoga teacher training is a journey into the heart of yoga for those who want to deepen their knowledge, refine their teaching skills, and expand their understanding of yoga.

It typically builds on foundational 200 YTT training with a more in-depth exploration of philosophy, anatomy, sequencing, and personal growth, often with a specialized focus.

In a Yoga Alliance-accredited 300 YTT, you will learn:

  • Advanced teaching techniques and sequencing
  • In-depth yoga history and philosophy
  • Applied anatomy and subtle body studies
  • Trauma-informed and inclusive teaching practices
  • Personal and spiritual formation as a leader
