How is Advent Celebrated? Try This Week Two Advent Meditation

Many Christians are not clear about the season of Advent and wonder why and how is advent celebrated. In this four-week blog series, we will find answers to questions like these and share a weekly advent meditation to help you enter into this sacred season.

How is Advent Celebrated?

The season of Advent is part of the Christian liturgical calendar and is designated as a season of spiritual preparation, reflection, and anticipation leading up to Christmas, which commemorates the birth of Jesus Christ. Advent also serves as a time to reflect on the promise of Christ’s second coming. It holds rich theological and spiritual significance for Christians around the world.

During the season of Advent, special preparations are made to help Christians “make room” in their hearts and minds for what is to come. 

How Long is Advent Season?

The Advent season lasts approximately four weeks, beginning on the fourth Sunday before Christmas and ending on Christmas Eve, December 24. The exact length varies slightly depending on the calendar year, as it always spans four Sundays but may not include a full fourth week.

Try This Week Two Advent Meditation

How do we make room in our minds and hearts for the  “advent” or the coming of Christ? 

Try this Advent meditation breath prayer for the second week of Advent. This advent meditation is a simple way to help you focus on the theme of peace. You can use it to reflect on God’s promise of peace brought through Jesus Christ.

Advent meditation for Week Two of Advent:

  • Preparation: Find a quiet and comfortable space where you won’t be disturbed. Sit or lie down in a comfortable position. Begin with a few minutes of mindful breathing. Pay attention to your breath, inhaling and exhaling naturally. This helps calm the mind and bring your attention to the present moment.
  • Focus: As you inhale, meditate on the peace of Christ. As you exhale, let go of your worries and invite His peace into your life.
  • Breath Prayer: (Inspired by Isaiah 26:3) This Advent meditation invites you to trust God’s peace in the midst of life’s chaos and reminds you of the peace Jesus offers us as the Prince of Peace.
    • Inhale: Lord, You keep me in perfect peace…
    • Exhale: …when my mind is stayed on You.
